What Japan's visa rules actually say

Japan's work visa categories for teaching (Instructor, or Specialist in Humanities) are based on your degree and job offer, not a fixed passport list written into immigration law. In principle, a South African graduate is as eligible as a British one.

In practice, many eikaiwa chains and ALT dispatch companies have informal hiring patterns that favour passports from the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Ireland, NZ and South Africa is sometimes included, sometimes not — it depends on the company. Don't assume either way; check each employer's stated eligibility.

Where South African applicants actually get hired

Smaller private eikaiwa and international kindergartens tend to be more open than the largest dispatch companies, since they hire individually rather than through blanket recruiting rules. University English programmes and online-first employers can also be more flexible.

A common mistake is applying broadly to the biggest-name ALT companies first and getting discouraged by rejections that reflect their internal policy, not your qualifications. Target mid-size and smaller schools directly instead.

The police clearance bottleneck

South Africa's Police Clearance Certificate process can take considerably longer than the UK or US equivalents. Apply for it as early as possible — ideally before you've locked in a start date — since Japanese visa processing won't begin until it's ready.
