Teach English Abroad by Nationality

Your passport decides more than your CV does. Some countries only issue teaching visas to a named list of nationalities, some care far more about the degree, and some barely check as long as the employer sponsors you. Here is what actually changes by country of citizenship — and what does not change for anyone.

The seven-passport list

China, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and several Gulf employers restrict native-speaker teaching visas to citizens of the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. If you hold one of those, the bachelor's degree is usually the only other gate.

EU access changes the picture for Irish passport holders.

Non-native routes differ again with a Brazilian passport.

EU and EEA citizens

Europe is the easy win: an EU passport means no work permit anywhere in the bloc, so Spain, Italy, Poland, Czechia and France are realistic without sponsorship. Outside Europe, some Asian visa lists will not include you even with perfect English.

UK citizens after Brexit

A British passport is still strong in Asia, the Gulf and Latin America, but it no longer carries EU work rights. Teaching in Spain or Italy now means a student visa, an assistantship programme or a sponsored contract.

American, Canadian, Australian and NZ applicants

You sit on most visa lists, and the process is the same shape as the UK one with different paperwork names: FBI or RCMP or AFP checks instead of ACRO, and a state or federal apostille instead of the FCDO.

Non-native English speakers

Fewer doors, not zero. Latin America, parts of Europe, online platforms and some private schools hire on ability. A Level 5 or CELTA plus a C2 English certificate changes how seriously you are read.

What never changes

Whatever your passport says: you need an accredited TEFL, clean documents, a police check and an employer willing to sponsor you. Nationality opens the door; the paperwork walks you through it.

Nationality rules are set by immigration authorities and change. Always confirm the current visa category with the embassy or official immigration site for your destination before paying for documents or flights.

Want the lighter start? A credible 120-hour course is still the entry route. Level 5 simply gives your application more weight.
