TEFL UK review: is it worth it?

Who TEFL UK is

TEFL UK is a British online TEFL provider. It says it has trained more than 60,000 graduates who now teach in over 60 countries, and its course pages show a 4.7 out of 5 rating from 900+ reviews on Reviews.io. Like every provider's own figures, treat those as marketing rather than independent proof — but they are consistent with a large, long-running business.

It sells a ladder of online courses, but most people choose between two: the 120-hour Professional TEFL and the 168-hour Level 5 TEFL.

The 120-hour Professional TEFL

This is TEFL UK's entry course: 120 hours split into 13 modules covering lesson planning, grammar, classroom management and teaching children. You do not need a degree or teaching experience to enrol. It comes with lifetime access, a bundle of 100 ready-made lesson plans, access to the TEFL UK job portal and job placement support.

120 hours is the figure most employers and visa checklists ask for, so for the typical first job in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand or Latin America it does the job. The list price is £99, and TEFL UK runs frequent sales on top of that. Add our code at checkout for 10% off.

Be realistic about the '3 weeks' headline: that assumes roughly 40 hours a week. Studying around a job, most people take 4–8 weeks.

The 168-hour Level 5 TEFL

The Level 5 is the more serious option. It is a regulated qualification on the UK framework, awarded by TQUK, an awarding organisation recognised by Ofqual. Level 5 sits at the same level of difficulty as the second year of a UK degree — that is a statement about difficulty, not that it replaces a degree.

Its list price is £269 (payable in three instalments) and Level 5 students get a discount on the 20-hour practicum if they want observed teaching practice. If you are aiming at more competitive markets such as Japan, South Korea or the Gulf, or you simply want the strongest CV line, this is the TEFL UK course to buy.

Accreditation and recognition

There is no single world authority for TEFL. What matters is whether an employer or immigration office will accept your certificate. For the Level 5, the Ofqual link is the strongest form of quality assurance in the UK system, because the qualification and its awarding body are both government-regulated.

For the 120-hour, TEFL UK's certificate can be legalised by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, which matters for countries like China and Vietnam that require an apostilled TEFL certificate for a work permit. Always confirm with your employer what they need before you pay.

The study experience

Courses are fully online and self-paced, made up of reading, examples and module quizzes. Reviews generally describe the content as clear and well structured; the most common gripes are around the mobile experience and wanting more tutor interaction. If you need someone checking in on you every week, Bridge's coaching model will suit you better.

Price and value

On price per accredited hour, TEFL UK is hard to beat. The 120-hour at sale price plus our 10% code is often cheaper than a night out, and the Level 5 at £269 list is well below most regulated Level 5 courses' full prices. The trade-off is less hand-holding.
