The TEFL Academy is one of the biggest online TEFL providers, selling to students in the UK, US, Ireland, Australia, Canada, South Africa and beyond. It has over 2,000 reviews on Trustpilot with an average of 4.9 out of 5, and shows a 4.8 rating from 10,000+ students on its own site.
Unlike most providers it focuses on one main online course — the Level 5 — rather than a long menu of hours.
The core course is 168 hours and covers teaching methodology, lesson planning, classroom management, and a grammar component. The TEFL Academy pitches it as 'the only online TEFL course you'll need', and for most entry-level and mid-level jobs that is fair: 168 hours exceeds the usual 120-hour minimum, and a Level 5 qualification reads stronger than a basic certificate.
When we checked in October 2026, the course was bundled with three optional 30-hour top-up courses (teaching business English, teaching online and one-to-one, and teaching young learners), 24 weekly one-hour webinars, two 15-hour bonus units and two eBooks. Those extras are genuinely useful if you plan to teach kids or online.
The Level 5 is a regulated qualification on the UK framework, awarded through a UK government-recognised (Ofqual-regulated) awarding organisation — independent reviewers currently name Qualifi. The TEFL Academy also states that its Level 5 is DEAC-approved in the US.
In practice this means employers who ask for 'a regulated Level 5' or 'an accredited 120+ hour TEFL' can check it. As always, confirm with your target employer, and note that a TEFL certificate never replaces the degree some visas require.
